Quantity language speakers show enhanced subcortical processing
2016
Abstract The complex auditory brainstem response (cABR) can reflect language-based plasticity in subcortical stages of auditory processing. It is sensitive to differences between language groups as well as stimulus properties, e.g. intensity or frequency. It is also sensitive to the synchronicity of the neural population stimulated by sound, which results in increased amplitude of wave V. Finnish is a full-fledged quantity language, in which word meaning is dependent upon duration of the vowels and consonants. Previous studies have shown that Finnish speakers have enhanced behavioural sound duration discrimination ability and larger cortical mismatch negativity (MMN) to duration change comp…
Paradoxes of Mentoring: An Ethnographic Study of a Mentoring Programme for Highly-educated Women with Migrant Backgrounds
2019
This article explores paradoxes that emerge in the mentoring of highly-educated, female, foreign-born job-seekers in Finland. Theoretically, the study is linked to the growing body of research scrutinising the integration or discrimination of migrants in working life. It analyses cultural practices and ideas that are visible and affect the mentoring interaction. On a more practical level, the paper determines how the mentors and mentees experience the mentoring, and how intercultural mentoring could be improved in order to promote mentees’ employment. The article is based on ethnography and 11 semi-structured interviews. Two major paradoxes and their links to cultural meanings were identifi…
Bet big or pet pig?: the influence of the Finnish phonetics on Finnish speakers’ pronunciation of English
2013
The influence of English film media on the Finnish language : The role of English in Finnish film magazine Episodi (2008)
2009
Nykyään median vaikutus on suuri ympäri maailmaa; kuuntelemme radiota, luemme lehtiä, katselemme televisiota ja elokuvia. Mediaa onkin tutkittu paljon viime aikoina. Tutkimusta kaivattaisiinkin lisää analysoimaan, miten eri mediat vaikuttavat kieliin. Tässä tutkielmassani olen pyrkinyt analysoimaan, miten englannin kielen vaikutusvaltainen elokuvateollisuus on vaikuttanut suomalaist…
The making of rallienglanti : cross-linguistic influence in Finnish speakers' pronunciation of English
2016

Cognitive skills and Finnish language inflection
1987
Covariation of cognitive processes and mastery of inflectional forms assessed by Berko's method were studied among 2.6–4.3-year-old children. The erroneous inflections produced by the children were analysed in order to discover rules underlying their morphological test responses. The use of the different rules was guided by the children's age and cognitive skills. The effects of contextual task factors varied at different mastery levels of the morphological test. The results indicate the need for concomitant analysis of the interaction between the child's existing level of morphology, cognitive skills and contextual variables of the tasks.
Insights into the agency, positioning and development of professional Finnish language skills of international nursing students
2016
This article focuses on international students studying in an English-mediated nursing degree program in Finland. From sociocognitive and ecological perspectives, this study examines the development of the students’ professional Finnish language skills and agency during their practical training. In addition, this article explores how students are positioned as capable workers. To shed light on the students’ professional language skills, agency, and positionings, interviews with vocational teachers, head nurses, and two international nursing students are examined using narrative analysis. The findings suggest that due to their lack of Finnish language skills, international students are posit…
Language and New Nationalism in Higher Education
2020
This chapter discusses the emerging concerns for the national languages, in particular Finnish. English, previously seen in relatively positive terms in the Finnish society, begins to be construed as a threat to Finnish higher education and research, and to Finnish language at large. The chapter discusses developments since the new University Act 2009. The tension between English and the national languages develops at the same time with changes in the political climate and the rise of populist and (new) nationalist politics, both in Finland and globally. The chapter presents the recycled discourses of frozen constitutional bilingualism, economic nationalism, political elites and killer Engl…
FRONTIER RESEARCH IN TORNEDALEN
1970
Publisher Summary This chapter highlights frontier research in Tornedalen. In view of the general alignment of the research carried on by ethnologists, it is a matter of course that a concentration of interest to regions with administrative boundaries of such a marked character as, for example, national frontiers may often give a sharper relief to the problems considered. The interest in questions around such boundaries here leads to inter-Nordic collaboration. This is what has happened in Tornedalen, the frontier zone between Finland and Sweden. The problems around a frontier dividing a coherent settled area make themselves felt in all sectors of human community life, and, they cannot be i…
